How we reimagined the Swiss Weeks 2026 Opening Event by breaking the conventions of a diplomatic reception and bringing something unexpected and innovative to the Capitol Theatre.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhen the Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore first approached me about the Swiss Weeks 2026 Opening Event, the brief was clear in its ambition but open in its form.

\n\nA culinary innovation soir\u00e9e. Eight Swiss-linked innovators. Over 200 guests. The Capitol Theatre.

\n\nAnd a desire to do something that hadn’t been done before. That last part is where I live. My first instinct was to look at the space itself. The Capitol Theatre is not a neutral venue,\u00a0 it carries history, architecture and drama in every corner. To simply set up a cocktail reception and a panel discussion would have been to ignore everything the room was offering. So instead, I asked a different question: what does this theatre want to be tonight?\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t

The stage, the spotlights, the sightlines, these were not a backdrop. They were the brief.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I developed a concept around the theatre’s natural language: the spotlight. Rather than positioning the innovators as exhibitors at static stands, we created an immersive experience with tastings for all guests and each of them was given a moment: a short, focused presentation under a dedicated spotlight, decentralised stages. The format was intimate but charged. Guests weren’t passive. They were an audience. And there is something powerful about an audience, it creates attention, presence and memory in a way that a mingling crowd simply cannot.

This decision restructured the entire evening. The usual rhythm of a diplomatic reception \u2014 arrival, canap\u00e9s, a speech, more canap\u00e9s \u2014 gave way to something more considered. Movement between the innovation stations felt purposeful. Conversations had context. The Swiss buffet by The Capitol Kempinski, crafted with locally sourced Singaporean ingredients, became part of the discovery rather than a backdrop to it.

On the design side, I worked with the architecture of the room rather than against it. The styling of the venue was conceived to honour its heritage while making space for something modern and forward-looking \u2014 which is, after all, exactly what Swiss innovation represents. Every detail, from the table arrangements on the stage to the flow between the different zones, was considered as part of a single coherent experience.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What made this evening possible was not just the concept \u2014 it was the collaboration. From the very first conversation, there was an openness, a mutual trust, and a shared excitement about doing something different. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThis is, I think, what distinguishes the work I do. It is not coordination for its own sake. It is not vendor management dressed up as creative direction. It is genuine conceptual ownership, from the first conversation about vision to the moment the room finally holds its breath before the first spotlight comes on.

\n\nThe evening was received with warmth by guests and innovators alike. Ambassador Frank Gr\u00fctter of the Swiss Embassy wrote to me afterward, noting the seamless coordination, the personal dedication \u2014 “down to the table decoration on the stage” \u2014 and the understanding of the cultural and diplomatic dimensions of the programme. \n\nFor me, that letter was a reminder of something I believe deeply: when you give yourself fully into understanding what an event needs to be \u2014 not what is expected, but what is possible \u2014 the room knows.
